That’s the advice I gave my wife over the weekend about all the National-related pressure she’s experiencing. But I find it hard to take my own advice. Unlike her, I’m not a plodder. I do my best work in spurts. (I suppose spurts do go farther when under pressure!) Sometimes I go for days without feeling like I’ve accomplished anything, and then several projects come to fruition all at once. I love those days, but they don’t happen often enough. I need several of them this week to get everything done, and then next week I need the gifts of calmness, coolness, and “collectiveness” as I work at the convention. I did say “work,” not “attend.” I don’t really attend the convention like most people. See my previous post.
I really bombed with daily posts last week, and I doubt I’m able to get back into that routine until after the National. I’m considering using Facebook mobile or Twitter to do some on-the-floor reporting of what’s going on in my little corner of the convention in Charleston next week. We’ll see if I pull that off. It won’t be too high a priority, but it might make a good diversion.
N.T. Wright, a respected Christian theologian, shows up in an unusual place to talk about heaven and his new book Surprised by Hope. This clip is proof that theologians can have a sense of humor. What he says seems biblically sound to me, but I haven’t read the book and am not endorsing it. I’m just glad that this much of the Christian message could be delivered to this audience.
A group called “Save the Internet” is lobbying Washington to prevent the big media companies from eliminating “net neutrality.” I’m not for big business further commercializing the net, but I’m not sure big government will do a better job of keeping the playing field level. What do you think?
The video below was made last year, but it describes what the fuss is about. For more up-to-date information, see the website savetheinternet.com. Happy Fourth of July!
It’s that time of the year around our office and the offices of the other Free Will Baptist agencies in town. The 72nd annual session of the National Association of Free Will Baptists will meet in Charleston, WV, July 20-23. Six thousand Free Will Baptists are expected to attend, and it seems there are thousands of details to take care before the conference begins.
Before I came to Randall House, the “National” was like a vacation and sometimes we called it that, at least after we left youth ministry and didn’t have a group of teenagers to chaperone. We didn’t always get to go. When we did, we went on the cheap because we usually paid our own way. We’re probably the only FWBs who not just ate meals out of a cooler but camped in a tent instead of staying in a downtown hotel. We’d nearly always combine the trip with a family vacation and would try to see some area (or on-the-way) attractions before or after the conference. continue reading » »
I missed my Tuesday post, so today I’m giving you two for the price of one. As always, the price for reading my blog is FREE! Speaking of free, I received a wonderful package yesterday morning. continue reading » »
You can order almost any currently published title from the phone/online distribution center here at Randall House. Just call 1-800-877-7030 or visit our website’s contact page. But what if the book you want is out of print? Here’s a website, BookFinder.com, that will help you find out-of-print titles from a multitude of online sources. I wish the search feature was a little more robust, but it is easy to use.
Students from Vanderbilt compete to see who can assemble a PC fastest. It’s hard to believe that the winner clocked in under 2 minutes. I can only tear one up that quickly! I hope the folks at Apple can repair my MacBook Pro that fast.
Thursday’s web link is one that I hope you’ll find useful. It’s a site that tracks gas prices in North America. I especially like the gas price heat map. If you are traveling, you might want to zoom in on the greener counties along your way to save a few cents a gallon. Sign up for a free membership with Gasbuddy.com and personalize your location and other information. If you don’t want to do that, at least visit this post on my blog to enter you zip code for gas prices in your area.
GPS navigation systems are becoming so mainstream that even my mother-in-law wants one, but here’s one for either the gadget geek or an 80s TV show addict. It’s a GPS unit that sounds like KITT (William Daniels) from the old Knight Rider television series. I wonder if David Hasselhoff has one in his car? Too bad it won’t drive the car for you or set off a smokescreen, though I’ve had a few cars that could do the latter. Check out the device and a video of it here.
Congratulations! As a faithful blog reader, you are the first to know that I have broken my Mac Book Pro. Look at the photo. No, that’s not some cruel joke screen saver. Yes, that is a crack in the lower left hand corner of the screen and the bottom third of the screen is illegible. I don’t want your sympathy. “We have the technology; we can rebuild him [it]….” Well, actually, I have an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar tomorrow morning. I expect them to fix the malfunctioning airport card and the screen (but that won’t be under AppleCare). They will ask me if I dropped it. No, I didn’t. Here’s what happened. continue reading » »
